Lancea et Sanctum

#lore #covenants

The Sanctified are the most overtly religious of the covenants, viewing vampiric existence not as a curse but as a divine mandate. They are God's instruments: set apart to test, tempt, and punish the living, and to maintain the boundary between the mortal world and the darkness beneath it.

The Sanctified Creed

Vampires are damned by design. The Lancea et Sanctum teach that this damnation is purposeful — God created the first vampire, Longinus, when the Roman soldier pierced Christ's side at the crucifixion and drank the blood that flowed. From that moment the Kindred were set apart: monsters in service of a divine plan, their hunger and predatory nature the instruments of God's judgement upon humanity.

To be Sanctified is to embrace this role fully. The Beast is not an enemy to be suppressed but a tool to be wielded with purpose. Cruelty without meaning is sin; cruelty in service of God's will is sacrament.

This makes them natural allies of order — and natural enemies of those who exist outside it. Independent vampires are heretics by definition: they refuse the covenant and the duty it carries.

Theban Sorcery

The Sanctified practice Theban Sorcery, a blood magic derived from scripture. By inscribing sacred texts in their own vitae they can call down blessings and curses, bind enemies, and work miracles consonant with their divine mandate. The practice is learned rather than instinctive, requiring study of the Testament of Longinus and initiation by a sorcerer of the covenant.

History

The covenant claims Longinus himself as its founder, though how much of this history is literal and how much is theological allegory is a matter of internal debate. What is certain is that the Lancea et Sanctum is among the oldest organised structures in Kindred society, its influence woven into the political history of Christendom. In domains where mortal religious authority was strong, the Sanctified were rarely far behind. They have outlasted empires, absorbed rivals, and adapted their theology across centuries — but the core conviction has never changed: the Kindred are instruments of God, and the Lancea et Sanctum are the keepers of that truth.
